NOTE: this is a resubmission of #291012 since that PR got labelled by review bot as needs response even though i've responded and for the life of me i could not retrigger the bot to just remove the label. this was an issue since, due to the needs response label none of the human maintainers was looking at it.

qq to any maintainer reading this: in the future who is a good person / group / @-tag to ping about this? hopefully i'll get better at making correct PRs to begin with and this exact scenario won't come up, but good to know nonetheless :)
